What is World Entrepreneurs Day?

Entrepreneur Day always occurs on the third Tuesday of November, which falls on November 16th this year. Being an entrepreneur means you organize and operate a business to produce goods or services for profit, but they take on a big risk to do so. World Entrepreneur Day (WED) honors those, men and women, who have built their business venture(s) from the ground up. 

What does it mean to celebrate something with intention?

Kate Paine, CEO of Standing Out Online, gave a workshop on How to Leverage LinkedIn for the best success, complete with before and after shots of Kym and Sandra’s LinkedIn Pages.

Sam Horn, CEO of the Intrigue Agency and a bestselling author, hosted the “Claim It. Name It. Fame It.” workshop. Sam shared the do's and don'ts from bestselling authors she's worked with, along with insights from her own 9 books. As well as the hundreds of clients she's helped get published and turn their books into TEDx talks, paid speaking careers, virtual coaching, and lucrative online programs.

If you want to thrive in today's rapidly changing world, you can't just be an entrepreneur, you have to be a thought leader. Traditional Publishing vs. Self-Publishing

 

Writing a book is an incredible ambition and for entrepreneurs it has many advantages.  Establishing yourself as an expert and having a book out there is a great way to gain exposure and grow your business.

The good news is that it’s never been easier to publish a book.  The bad news is that it’s never been easier to publish a book.   

I worked for Barnes & Noble for 10 years specializing in author events.  I worked with major publishers, subsidy publishers, and self-published authors to plan, promote, and source books for hundreds upon hundreds upon hundreds of events. For years I spent each day working with incredibly knowledgeable people. I saw authors reach insane heights of success, and others crash and burn.  I saw the good, the bad, and the ugly of each side of the dice.  

As an entrepreneur, you don't want to waste time and energy on something that isn't going to grow your business. To get your book published and to get it done right, it’s important to have a thorough understanding of the three different publishing paths you can take, and their pros and cons.

TRADITIONAL PUBLISHING

Whether you realize it or not, this is the method almost everyone is most familiar with.  If you walk into a Public Library or Target, any book you see on their shelves is traditionally published.  If you walk into a bookstore, chances are 99% of the books are traditionally published.  Many think traditional publishing is the more challenging route because of the gatekeeping aspect; you have to be chosen. But when looking at the benefits and seeing if jumping over those hurdles are worth it, it’s all about what you want to get out of publishing your book. 

PRO: Prestige.  If you get your book traditionally published it means that you were selected from a pool of thousands. You’ve done the same thing people who’ve won the Pulitzer Prize have done. Anyone can get in a pool and swim, but not everyone gets to go to the Olympics, and traditional publishing is the Olympics of the book world. 

CON: Longer turnaround time.  Just because you’ve completed your book and a publisher bought it, doesn’t mean it’s ready to go.  When you sign on the dotted line it will be at least a year or two before your book is on the shelves. You work with an editor and a copyeditor (there’s a difference) for a long while, while other teams work on marketing, cover design, formatting, working with buyers, and more.  And let’s not forget that traditionally published books have a different printing process that also requires more time.

Mastering First Impressions

First impressions are important. People make judgements about you in as little as 20 seconds. Studies have shown that first impressions, particularly in person are dominated by gut feelings. Some traits we can control (handshake, smile, eye contact, etc.) and others we cannot. But what about after those 20 seconds are up? After all, networking events are longer than 20 seconds and there are lots of opportunities to meet new people. What happens when you need to cement your good impression and build on the simple things? Here are some tips to make an A+ first impression. 

Put down your phone.  We get it. You’re at an event, you meet new people, you want to check in, tag, take selfies, and show the world you’re a boss lady! But be strategic when capturing that content! Living in the moment is important, and when making connections for real and not just for show, you want to be authentic. If you're all about your phone, it may look like you're all about you and the people you meet may get the impression you're not interested in a meaningful connection.  Capture the social content you need and save to your phone to be posted later.  That way you can be present for the people you are meeting AND be thoughtful in what you're posting after the event to give the event organizers well-deserved public kudos! 

Listen more than you talk.  When diving into networking it can be easy to think “what’s in it for me?” Try to shake off that mentality and reframe your thinking to be “what’s in it for us?” People can tell when you’re waiting for your turn to speak and not truly listening. A good listener is a good contact to have, be that person for the people you meet, and they’ll be more likely to be that person for you.

5 New Year's Resolutions Every Entrepreneur Should Make in 2023

As you may have learned from our smash hit Webinar: Goal to Game Plan, NOW is the time to make those plans for 2023! We have our work goals and personal goals, but every good entrepreneur knows the secret is to get clear and start STRONG. 
 
1.) Get clear on your finances. Any ambiguity surrounding your finances should be made crystal clear. That should be a top (if not THE top) resolution for 2023. It may not be the most invigorating way to start the year, but before tax season, take the time and hire the right experts to answer all your questions.
 
2.) Understand your goals. Your everyday actions should always be working toward your goals. Take the time to create an action plan around your goals and gain a deeper understanding of what actions you must take to achieve them.
 
3.) Be more empathetic. They say to treat the janitor with the same respect as the CEO. This is especially true for CEOs. To be a leader worth following, you must remember that everyone around you also has hopes and dreams, perhaps you can both help each other get there. 
 
4.) Take care of your physical, mental, and emotional health. Being an entrepreneur is rewarding, but it’s hard work! You must treat your body and your mind with the utmost care and understanding. This includes taking time off, nourishing yourself, exercise, and more! 
 
5.) Find an accountability partner. With so many moving pieces, it can be especially easy to let yourself off the hook. It’s one of the reasons so many New Year’s resolutions fail! So, as we move into the last couple weeks of 2022, find that person who will keep you accountable while cheering you on. No one does it alone.

The Foundations of Social Media for Business Owners

 Social Media is here to stay, and the reality is that a social media presence is no longer optional for businesses, it’s mandatory.  Consumers are now more likely to visit a business’s Facebook page before visiting their website, and if you’re not in the game, you’ll be seen as (at best) behind the times, or (at worst) illegitimate.  The good news is that there are tons of social media courses and seminars to familiarize you with how to leverage your social media presence.  But depending on when you hopped on the social media train (or how long you’ve avoided it), even the learning tools can be intimidating if you don’t know the basics.  You can’t learn to read without learning your ABCs, so if you’re someone who has previously listened to experts on social media strategy, but found yourself saying “Wait, what is a reel? What is a hashtag? Why are their different kinds of pages?”  We’re hear to help.  Here are the ABCs of social media:

Best advice for someone who is a social media novice?

Don’t jump in all at once. If you’re managing and building your social media on your own, pick ONE platform (probably best to start with Facebook or Instagram). Learn that platform, give yourself time to get comfortable, learn, engage, and when you feel good about it and it’s a part of your regular workflow with ease, add another. At the start, it’s better to have one STRONG, well thought out presence than four flimsy and disjointed accounts.

BONUS! Your Social Media Glossary:

Personal Profile: A personal profile is about YOU. While many people use their personal pages to promote their businesses as well, personal profiles are where people post about their lives, families, pets, etc.

Business Page: A designated business page is about your business, not (necessarily) you as a person. This is where you promote your business hours, contact info, calls to action, services, new promotions, etc. Facebook and LinkedIn have completely separate templates for Personal vs. Business pages. With other platforms, it’s the name and content that shows the differentiation.

Post: This is most-commonly used for Facebook and Instagram posts that are not stories or reels.

Stories: Are usually in the moment posts that shares your day with users. They last for 24 hours and disappear afterward. Stories are used on Instagram and Facebook.

Diary of My First eWN ICON

When I started with eWomenNetwork a mere six weeks before conference, I was told that ICON 2021 would be our Super Bowl.  Now I don’t know much about sports, but I do know that breaking in a new player weeks before the big game, is a move most coaches wouldn’t be thrilled about, but the whole team was nothing but supportive, patient, and encouraging. 

I knew the days would be long (but rewarding), and I’d finally get a chance to see many of the lovely faces I’d met over zoom in person.  And so I packed up my dog and sent him to stay with my Mother for the week, while I checked into the Embassy Suites, in a room bigger than my apartment. 

In a way it was peculiar to be at a live event again.  All the jobs I‘ve had before this one have been rooted heavily in large-scale events, and for a while, as we all navigated the solitary, screen driven, hug-free isolation of 2020, it seemed like we’d never be able to attend one again. And yet, over 300 of us made it.

  • I may be a millennial, but I am not Instagram savvy. I’m glad I wasn’t alone in being behind the times in my knowledge of Instagram Reels. 

  • Before Kate Paine gave us a look at the before and afters of Sandra and Kym’s LinkedIn pages, I had no idea there were so many features I wasn’t utilizing. I thought my LinkedIn was pretty good, but it just goes to show that sometimes you just need an expert. Also, that blue dress was sensational.

  • Can we just talk about Sam Horn for a second? What a speaker.  Her voice is so soothing and yet her content is so electric! Her Pre-Con talk was so good, I took pictures of the slides.  I didn’t have the pleasure of seeing her talk on Friday night, but I’m told she shut the place down!

  • The Smart Money Talk was a delight.  I had it in my head that men and women who specialize in finance are boring, simply because I myself am not a finance person and the subject tends to go over my head.  I was so WRONG! In addition to being experts in their field, Deborah Daniel and Robin Edgar were engaging and hilarious!

  •  The Femtor Awards are one heck of a production! The lights, the music the videos- WOW! I was not expecting the scale of the Femtor Awards to be so epic. Congratulations to the incredible women who were recognized from all over the country.

1. Set Your Weekly Goals

These can be related to your work- and day-to-day life. It’s just as important to keep a list of your completed goals, as well. Reward yourself no matter how small the accomplishment is - progress is progress. Plus, this will help give you something to look forward to and that’s motivation in itself. Make a candlelit bath, a new book, or a Netflix binge night an incentive. These simple, yet impactful moments of self-love will not only give you a confidence boost, but will help rejuvenate and prevent negative thoughts like self-doubt. 

2. Find Inspiration Around Every Corner

You come across a lot of stimulants throughout your day whether you realize it or not. The key is to take advantage of these things and transmute them into motivation. This will result in the right mindset of focusing on the positive influences around you. 

It’s as easy as turning on your favorite podcast, watching YouTube videos of relatable people offering daily affirmations or listening to your favorite Spotify playlist that gets you going. Another great way to get inspired, if you have more time on your hands, are Ted Talks. These influential videos not only motivate through storytelling, but offer advice on various issues like business, health and lifestyle, finances, and relationships.

3. Maintain a Positive and Optimistic Mindset

This may be one of the most important factors to start your week off on the right foot. Going into the new week with a positive and optimistic mindset can affect your productivity and efficiency. What you think, you become. We’re human, so it’s completely normal to experience dark clouds, but keep in mind they will pass. Focus on the good things surrounding you and watch how that energy radiates.

Practice this every morning by creating a mantra you can recite. Remember, while you’re reciting this put all your intentions into it. If you don’t have the capacity to do so yet, try waking up to meditation music, stretching and avoid touching your phone at all costs.
