How to Easily Write a Blog that People Want to Read

There's a lot more to writing a blog than the actual content itself. But who has the time or the patience to write a blog if nobody is going to read it? After all, you've got a business to run! As a former CBS Radio Reporter and TV News Producer for all the major networks, I know what it means to crank out stories under a tight deadline that people will actually care about. So, I have a pretty good idea what makes people stick with a story. It's not brain science, but there are a few critical elements you need to learn to easily write a blog that people want to read.

How To Easily Write an Blog That People Want to Read

Visual Content Rules!

Yes, video is king in terms of content marketing. However, using visuals in general is a surefire way to get readers engaged in your content. Here's a few findings in a recent report by Social Media Examiner that proves my point:

1) 37% of marketers said visual marketing was the most important form of content for their business, second only to blogging (38%).

2) 74% of social media marketers use visual assets in their social media marketing, ahead of blogs (68%) and videos (60%).

3) When people hear information, they're likely to remember only 10% of that information three days later. However, if a relevant image is paired with that same information, people retained 65% of the information three days later.

Finding Balance in Chaos

Guest Post by Premier Success Coach Kim Griffith, MA,        Co-Active Parenting and Wellness Coach

Does this sound familiar?

I had a plan … I was organized and in the flow. I had a deadline to write an article on trauma for a parenting magazine and write this blog post, so set aside 2 full days to complete them. I felt confident and in control of my time.

And then, the biggest ice storm hit Dallas and all my plans came to a screeching halt.  My daughter’s school closed so she was home.  Then came our power outages, and finally, my husband wrecked his car trying to get out of the driveway!  I had to take and pick him up from work (he’s a doctor and babies don’t wait to be delivered)!  Although this is an extreme scenario, it expresses how crazy life can get as we are juggling being a mom, wife and running a business.  When we love all of them, HOW DO WE FIND OUR BALANCE?

I have found that getting REGULATED (calm and centered) is of the utmost importance.  When we are stressed and run by thought patterns that keep us in “survival mode,” our brain is limited to fight, flight or freeze, which shows up as anxiety, fear, frustration, anger etc.  No one is getting their needs met in this state of mind, not to mention the toll it begins to take on our physical well-being.  When we can take a few deep, conscious breaths and find a sense of calm, we give our brain a chance to tap into creative solutions, increase our energy and have the space to ask some important questions.

Ask yourself, what is the most important thing to me right now in this moment?  What do I value the most in my life?  VALUES are our road map to making good decisions and living a truly happy life.  After getting regulated and asking myself these questions, I was able to regain my sense of calm, and be present in what I was doing.  My energy was amazing and I wrote this post in 20 minutes!  I felt productive, with my creative juices flowing.

I found my personal balance in this extreme set of circumstances by honoring and being in tune with my values and priorities. And this, I believe, is the first step in balancing meeting our own needs with the needs of our family. What is of highest value and priority to you?   Live in alignment with them and your business will flourish!

In summary….1) Breath  2) Regulate 3) Accept  4) Ask what is most important (Values, Priorities) 5) Be Present in what your doing 6) Trust and allow your creativity to flow!

When to "Bless and Release" Your Customer

If you've been in business long enough, you probably have had to fire a customer. It's not fun. I'm sure you thought long and hard before you made the decision to let them go. Sandra Yancey, CEO and & Founder of eWomenNetwork, calls it "Bless and Release."

When Your Ideal Customer Needs to be Fired

The 80/20 Rule

You've most likely heard of the 80/20 rule, or the Pareto Principle, named for the Italian economist, Vilfredo Pareto. The basic principle in business is 80% of your sales come from 20% of your clients. On the flip side, 20% account for 80% of the problems.

Your goal is to focus on the 20% who make the cash register ring AND, this is really critical here, who are also in alignment with your core principles and values.

How Aesthetic Plays an Important Role in Business

If you attended our 19th Annual Entrepreneur Conference + Expo, then you dipped your toes into the importance of aesthetics in your business. Aesthetic is the philosophical study of beauty and taste. The term stems from the Greek word “aisthetikos,” meaning “of sense perception,” and is related to the study of sensory values. Studies have proven the benefits of creating a great aesthetic in various aspects of business from marketing materials to product design. It leads to better usability and user experience - so, have you incorporated this into your business?

We’re back with our Digital Advantage team to provide some insight into what you need to know about aesthetics.

What is aesthetic design?

In modern society, it is a phenomenon that social psychologists call “the halo effect”. It bases the belief off the fact that the minds of humans tend to assume that good-looking people have other positive qualities aside from their physical features. This flows into the design of business products and services. When they are visually pleasing, they are perceived as more valuable and having other desirable qualities.

As the saying goes, “beauty is in the eyes of the beholder.” However, a misconception that some have is that aesthetics are simply sight-based and does not include our other senses. It’s truly a 4D experience, especially with the advancement in technology opening up more doors of opportunity to maximize on aesthetics - think VR and AR technologies.

How does it heighten the senses of consumers?

There are 5 important categories to consider when achieving an efficient aesthetic.

Vision - This is the first and most dominant sense to consider. Our sight can act as a magnet attracting beauty to our eyes. It’s based on the key elements of visual aesthetics, such as the color, shape, texture, visual weight, balance, pattern, line and movement.

Hearing - Ears are capable of perceiving an aesthetic, as well. The ability to hear how smooth a product is operating or the tone of notifications from a digital product can impact your user experience. The key elements for sound include loudness, beat, melody, pattern, noise, and repetition.

Women Entrepreneurs are Crushing It!

Other research tells us that those women are crushing it. Seed-stage venture capital firm, First Round Capital, found that its investments in companies with women founders performed 63% better than those with management teams that were all men.

How to Choose Strategic Business Partners

Strategic business partners come in all shapes and sizes. Partners aren’t just the ones with whom you share profit and expenses. They are everyone from your supplier to your customer to your investor. Your partnerships will affect your business on many levels, so you need to know how to choose your strategic business partners with great care.

How to Choose Strategic Business Partners

Donna Peak with Entrepreneurship.org says picking a business partner is similar to picking a tennis partner. You pick a good one you win. A bad one, you lose.

Some criteria for choosing a strategic business partner is based on the following questions you should ask yourself:

  1. What value would this partner bring to your company that would have the greatest impact?

  2. Is your company and theirs compatible?

  3. Are their goals and strategies consistent with yours?

  4. Do they have a good reputation with other partners?

  5. What are the risks of being in partnership and what are the risks of not being in partnership with them?

  6. Can they provide access to other potential partners?

Have a partnership disaster or success? Tell us about it in the comments below!

Women-Owned Businesses Lack Access to Capital

According to the 2012 Census report, women own 36% of all privately held businesses. They account for an economic impact of $3 trillion due to jobs they create and maintain. That's 16 percent of all U.S. jobs! Yet, one of the biggest issues for women-owned businesses is lack of access to capital.

Women-Owned Businesses Lack Access to Capital

According to a report issued by the U.S. Senate Committee on Small Business and Entrepreneurship, "women account for only 16 percent of conventional small business loans and 17 percent of SBA loans even though they represent 30 percent of all small companies. Of conventional small business loans, women only account for 4.4 percent of total dollar value of loans from all sources. In other words, just $1 of every $23 in conventional small business loans goes to a woman-owned business."

And that's not the only issue women have with access to funds. Women receive just 7 percent of venture funds, and the percent of female venture capitalists has actually declined from previous years. That decline means less women are in the position to support women entrepreneurs by investing in their growth.

Why Aren't Women Business-Owners Accessing Capital?

There are a few reasons why women aren't accessing capital. The National Women's Business Council report on Access to Capital by High-Growth Women-Owned Businesses shows that women lack the qualities typically associated with innovation and high growth entrepreneurship. That includes self-confidence and a willingness to assume risks that may accompany failure.

A study by Women Entrepreneurs in New York City shows that male business-owners don't seem to struggle as much with lack of confidence and unwillingness to take risks. The study says, "Though men also cite funding as a significant challenge, they are twice as likely to use traditional banks to fund and launch their businesses with as much as double the capital."

According to that same WENYC study, 90% of women business owners say they use their personal savings as the main source of capital. Besides not wanting to take a risk, they say it's due to a lack of knowledge about alternative funding sources as well as banks' limited interest in lending to low-capital industries (where many women entrepreneurs are concentrated). Other studies show that women lag men in the area of self-efficacy around their own success. That means women just don't believe in they have the skills necessary to create a successful business.

Face the Fear and Dream Big!

Be afraid. Be very afraid. When clients are going for their big dream, they will often ask me, “When does the fear go away?” My answer is, “When you stop dreaming and start settling.”

Dream BIG

See, there is this Life Force that is flowing through you always inviting you into a greater discovery and realization of who you really are. Your dream is life’s gift to you as the way to wake you up to even more of your magnificence.

As you answer the call for something greater, it means that you make a decision to go beyond anything you have ever imagined for yourself to date.

That means you are going for something you don’t necessarily know how to do in this moment, nor do you have any proof or reassurance that it is going to work. (If you do know how to do it, you dream is not big enough.)

14 Social Media DON'TS for Entrepreneurs | Women entrepreneur network ottawa

The constant evolution of social media can make it difficult to stay on top of social media etiquette and best practices, especially if you’re an entrepreneur who has a million other things to attend to. When it comes to social media etiquette for business, it takes practice to fully get a grasp on how these tips apply to your day-to-day execution.

Here are 14 social media DON’TS when it comes to social media etiquette for businesses:

DON’T: Have one social media page for your personal and business account

Sounds pretty obvious right? Not always, especially when you prefer convenience over compromise. Remember to set up completely new social media pages for your business the moment you decide to enter the world of social media. You should use your personal account to share your perspective and information about your life, which should not be connected to your business.

DON’T: Post whenever you want / can

There’s a method to the madness! If you don’t manage and create a schedule for posting, you could miss out on opportunities. Consider investing in a platform scheduler, such as Later or Buffer to help you with planning your content out. Doing so will allow you to be consistent and grow your digital presence more efficiently.

DON’T: Forget to use social media holidays

Being able to keep on top of news and trends is what makes a great social media marketer. Celebrating social media holidays can help you increase brand awareness and reach. Sharing hashtag holiday-themed content can also help to engage your audience. Get creative with it and be sure to only utilize holidays that are relevant to your business.

DON’T: Dismiss engaging with others and encouraging engagement

Engagement is a crucial indicator of social media success. In fact, 64 percent of marketers said that increasing engagement is vital for a social media marketing strategy. Social media is a two-way street. You must cultivate a community by being involved and creating content like polls and calls-to-action to get them involved too.
