Building Networks that Empower: How Women Can Create Effective Business Networks

In the realm of business, networking is not just about building a list of contacts—it's about cultivating meaningful relationships that can provide mutual support and opportunities for growth. For women in business, these connections can serve as a springboard to overcome hurdles, achieve professional goals, and pave the way for future generations of women leaders. Today, we'll dive deep into how women can create effective business networks and how such networks can empower them to reach new heights in their careers.

Understanding the Importance of Networking for Women in Business

Research has repeatedly shown that robust business networks play a crucial role in the success of entrepreneurs and professionals alike. It's through these networks that we gain access to essential resources—knowledge, opportunities, mentorship, and support. However, the gender disparity within business networks is not insignificant. Women in business often find themselves contending with male-dominated networks, where access to resources may be limited. As a result, it's vital for women to build their networks proactively, focusing not just on quantity but also on the quality of connections.

Navigating the Networking Landscape

The world of networking can feel overwhelming. It's teeming with networking events, online platforms, and various groups that can sometimes feel more daunting than helpful. For women looking to build their business networks, it's crucial to navigate this landscape strategically. Consider your professional goals and target industries, and identify networking opportunities that align with these parameters. Seek out events and platforms where you're likely to meet peers, mentors, and potential business partners who share your interests and aspirations. The more relevant your network, the more empowering it will be.

Building Meaningful Connections

Once you've identified the right networking opportunities, the next step is to build meaningful connections. Networking isn't just about exchanging business cards—it's about engaging in authentic, mutually beneficial relationships. This means asking insightful questions, offering your knowledge and expertise where appropriate, and maintaining regular contact. Networking for women in business isn't about conforming to an "old boys' club" model; instead, it's about fostering relationships based on respect, empathy, and mutual

8 Skills Every CEO Must Have

Being a CEO is a challenging and complex job that requires a broad range of skills to be successful. A CEO must be able to manage the day-to-day operations of a company while also making strategic decisions that shape the future of the organization. Just because you’re an expert in your field, doesn’t necessarily mean you’ve cultivated all of your CEO skills just yet. So, let’s see what it takes:

Strategic thinking. One of the most important skills that a CEO needs is strategic thinking. A CEO must be able to see the big picture and make decisions that will guide the company's long-term growth and success.

Leadership. CEOs must be strong leaders who can inspire and motivate their teams to achieve their goals. They must be able to communicate a clear vision for the company and provide direction and support to their employees. Remember, a true leader goes beyond telling other people what to do. A true leader also inspires others to rise to the occasion.

Financial acumen. CEOs must have a deep understanding of the financial aspects of their business. They must be able to read financial statements, analyze data, and make informed decisions that will ensure the financial stability and growth of the company.

Adaptability. In today's fast-paced business world, CEOs must be adaptable and able to respond quickly to changing market conditions. They must be able to pivot their strategies when necessary and embrace new technologies and trends.

Communication skills. CEOs must be excellent communicators who can convey their vision and ideas to employees, investors, customers, and other stakeholders. They must be able to listen actively and respond thoughtfully to feedback and questions. CEOs also handle communication with all kinds of people and must learn to pivot their style accordingly.

The Entrepreneur Playlist for 2023 | women entrepreneur blogs

Being an entrepreneur at any stage can feel like a lonely gig. Whether it be a day that makes you want to yank your hair out or shout at the sky in triumph, sometimes you need a little mood music to keep things positive, moving, and (let’s be honest) downright cinematic.

The Champion by Carrie Underwood

Favorite lyrics for entrepreneurs:

I am invincible, unbreakable

Unstoppable, unshakeable

They knock me down, I get up again

I am the champion, you're gon' know my name

You can't hurt me now, I can't feel the pain

I was made for this, yeah, I was born to win

I am the champion.

Roar by Katy Perry

Favorite lyrics for entrepreneurs:

Now I'm floatin' like a butterfly

Stinging like a bee, I earned my stripes

I went from zero, to my own hero

The Focused Entrepreneur

With so many balls in the air, it can be easy to drop them all when the unexpected nudges it’s way into your line of vision. It’s in the entrepreneur’s nature to multitask and wear several different hats at once. But when does too much multitasking hurt the quality of your work and your productivity? What happens when an email totally derails your day? How can you manage to stay on task?

DND is your friend. I know we all think that it’s laughable to turn off our phones, but we lived without them for thousands of years before the 90s made them ubiquitous and the noughties made them essential. But Do Not Disturb isn’t permanent. It’s okay to unplug long enough to get things done. And remember, you can still allow emergency contacts to reach you on this setting, so if you need your family to have access, no worries!

Turn off notifications!  Yes, social media is a necessity for business owners, there’s no denying that. But when push comes to shove, and you need to keep your eye on the prize. Turn off those notifications. On your phone, on your desktop, your tablet- turn them all OFF. Take advantage of those automatic responses and trust that any comments or messages will be there when you return. As long as you respond within 24 hours, you’re all good!

Don’t be a slave to email.  Set designated times to check your email and stick to them. That doesn’t mean that you can’t utilize email between those times, it just means that you’re not responding to incoming emails outside of designated times. It’s so easy to say, “this will only take a minute”, but when you have an entrepreneurial level of emails in your inbox “this will only take a minute” can easily turn into hundreds of minutes.

The Foundations of Social Media for Business Owners

Social Media is here to stay, and the reality is that a social media presence is no longer optional for businesses, it’s mandatory.  Consumers are now more likely to visit a business’s Facebook page before visiting their website, and if you’re not in the game, you’ll be seen as (at best) behind the times, or (at worst) illegitimate.  The good news is that there are tons of social media courses and seminars to familiarize you with how to leverage your social media presence.  But depending on when you hopped on the social media train (or how long you’ve avoided it), even the learning tools can be intimidating if you don’t know the basics.  You can’t learn to read without learning your ABCs, so if you’re someone who has previously listened to experts on social media strategy, but found yourself saying “Wait, what is a reel? What is a hashtag? Why are their different kinds of pages?”  We’re hear to help.  Here are the ABCs of social media:

Let's take a look at the most common platforms:

  • Facebook
  • Instagram
  • Pinterest
  • Twitter
  • LinkedIn

Best advice for someone who is a social media novice?

Don’t jump in all at once. If you’re managing and building your social media on your own, pick ONE platform (probably best to start with Facebook or Instagram). Learn that platform, give yourself time to get comfortable, learn, engage, and when you feel good about it and it’s a part of your regular workflow with ease, add another. At the start, it’s better to have one STRONG, well thought out presence than four flimsy and disjointed accounts.

BONUS! Your Social Media Glossary:

Personal Profile: A personal profile is about YOU. While many people use their personal pages to promote their businesses as well, personal profiles are where people post about their lives, families, pets, etc.

Business Page: A designated business page is about your business, not (necessarily) you as a person. This is where you promote your business hours, contact info, calls to action, services, new promotions, etc. Facebook and LinkedIn have completely separate templates for Personal vs. Business pages. With other platforms, it’s the name and content that shows the differentiation.

Post: This is most-commonly used for Facebook and Instagram posts that are not stories or reels.

Stories: Are usually in the moment posts that shares your day with users. They last for 24 hours and disappear afterward. Stories are used on Instagram and Facebook.

Reels: Short-form video content used on Instagram and Facebook. Facebook reels are 30 seconds or less. Instagram reels are 60 seconds or less.

Pins: Are essentially bookmarks that people use to save the content they’re curating on Pinterest.

Tweet: A post on Twitter. Also used as a verb when interacting with other Twitter users.

Facebook Group: A feature on Facebook that allows you to have a private community focused on any subject.

6 Ways to Kickstart Your Week Right

Mondayitis is the feeling of weariness and general distress that individuals feel when starting Monday morning work week. It’s typically expected to follow the excitement of the weekend as the ‘non-workdays’ seem to come slow and leave fast. Before you know it, you’re waking up to the sound of your alarm before the sun rises to a new week. You suddenly stop and realize you haven’t completed the tasks you had on your to-do list and now it’s growing even longer.

For many of us, this can be overwhelming and difficult to conquer at the beginning of the week. We have great news - it doesn’t have to be. We’re back with our Digital Advantage team to give you six simple and effective ways to kickstart your week off right. No more manic Monday’s...who’s with us?

1. Set Your Weekly Goals

These can be related to your work- and day-to-day life. Whether it’s following a bedtime, prepping your meals or enforcing deadlines on specific projects, setting realistic goals for yourself is a great way to get out of your comfort zone and practice self-control. These skills will also help you become a more productive and well-rounded individual as you learn to master them.

It’s just as important to keep a list of your completed goals, as well. Reward yourself no matter how small the accomplishment is - progress is progress. Plus, this will help give you something to look forward to and that’s motivation in itself. Make a candlelit bath, a new book, or a Netflix binge night an incentive. These simple, yet impactful moments of self-love will not only give you a confidence boost, but will help rejuvenate and prevent negative thoughts like self-doubt.

2. Find Inspiration Around Every Corner

You come across a lot of stimulants throughout your day whether you realize it or not. The key is to take advantage of these things and transmute them into motivation. This will result in the right mindset of focusing on the positive influences around you.

It’s as easy as turning on your favorite podcast, watching YouTube videos of relatable people offering daily affirmations or listening to your favorite Spotify playlist that gets you going. Another great way to get inspired, if you have more time on your hands, are Ted Talks. These influential videos not only motivate through storytelling, but offer advice on various issues like business, health and lifestyle, finances, and relationships.

3. Maintain a Positive and Optimistic Mindset

This may be one of the most important factors to start your week off on the right foot. Going into the new week with a positive and optimistic mindset can affect your productivity and efficiency. What you think, you become. We’re human, so it’s completely normal to experience dark clouds, but keep in mind they will pass. Focus on the good things surrounding you and watch how that energy radiates.

Practice this every morning by creating a mantra you can recite. Remember, while you’re reciting this put all your intentions into it. If you don’t have the capacity to do so yet, try waking up to meditation music, stretching and avoid touching your phone at all costs.

How to De-stress During an Overwhelming Week

Maintaining what feels like a hundred tasks over the span of seven days can become overwhelming. This causes stress and ultimately creates a worn-out version of yourself. Over time stress can lead to anxiety, depression, a low immune system, and other harmful effects.

At eWomenNetwork, we’re all about taking time to self-care. It’s true that your business can only function as well as you are functioning - and you can’t be at your full potential when you’re stressed out. Next time you’re feeling overwhelmed, consider these destressers that can take you from stress to success.

Spend time in nature. Take a break from your day to go for a walk or step outside and take three deep breaths then go back to your task. According to one study, spending time outdoors can lower levels of cortisol - a hormone used as a marker for stress. Consider working remotely from a garden or outdoor cafe. Even opening a window can change the mood in a workspace in an instant. Mother nature has many healing properties that are right outside your door.

Meditate. Put on meditation music, pace your breathing, and control your thoughts. There are easy-to-follow videos you can find if you’re a beginner. It’s proven that the benefits of mediation can last up to six days - that’s almost an entire week! Imagine what taking 10 minutes out of your day to meditate could do for your mental health. Try adding elements of aromas and hot tea to enrich the experience.

Take deep breaths. You’ve probably heard this saying before, but it can help lower stress levels in just minutes. Focus on your breaths being slow and steady. This can lower your heart rate and boost oxygen levels. Close your eyes and picture white light representing positivity as you’re breathing in, hold it, and picture black smoke representing negative energy releasing from the body. Practice this in moments when you become aware that you are starting to feel overwhelmed.

Set a time limit for social media. It has become so integrated into the fabric of everyday life. You may not even notice the effects of checking Instagram multiple times a day has until it’s too late. This can cause comparison stress, FOMO (fear of missing out), mood influence, and other negative underlying effects. Get an app that allows you to put a timer on social media apps if your phone settings don’t already have one.

What to Wear to the Annual eWN ICON

We are less than a week away from eWomenNetwork’s 2021 ICON, so it’s crunch time to find yourself some iconic outfits. Our conference will have you moving around quite a bit, engaging and interacting with others, so dress for comfort. However, keep in mind there will be several photo opps and when networking, you always want to dress to impress! If you don’t know what you’re wearing to ICON yet, don’t worry, our digital advantage team has curated fashion tips specifically for our event.

  • Lean Towards More Modest Choices - Short dresses or skirts and deep-cut tops can be challenging for females to wear to conferences depending on the viewing angle of the audience. Many women’s outfits are made of delicate material that is often see-through, keep that in mind when putting on your conference outfits - you definitely don’t want your bra strap showing through your shirt.
  • Extra Clothes For Your Personal Goals - The social media frontier is changing, and they are more opportunities for you to get in on. Our creative director Briana Dai will be teaching our members all about creating Instagram Reels for your business and why they are so important. If you bring extra clothes, you can utilize any free time at the conference to just go for it to start creating your videos. Also, if you are from out of town and you want to explore the area you’ll want to bring extra clothes as it will be quite hot here in the DFW metroplex.
  • Be Aware of Accessories - Stay conscious of any accessories you are wearing or thinking of including in your conference outfits. For example, you don’t want to wear big, shiny jewelry that will reflect light or squeaky shoes that will create a distraction for your audience’s attention. Of course, stay true to your style but also be aware of wearing patterns that could potentially be distracting. Before you go on stage, empty your pockets of keys, wallet, or anything else that may be distracting to the eye. When you do a soundcheck, wear the outfit you are planning to wear so you can test any physical activity you may do while giving your speech and to make sure your audience is listening to you and not your noisy shoes. When picking accessories to wear, focus on subtle additions that can add to your outfit and are still in line with being professional, such as simple earrings that add a pop of color.

Hopefully, these fashion tips have helped you in preparation for our upcoming conference or at least helped you re-think some of your choices. We can’t wait to see all of you at our 2021 conference in just a few, short days. Don’t forget to tag us on Instagram wearing your ICONIC conference outfits!

The Importance of Business Conferences for Entrepreneurs

When it comes to being an entrepreneur, it’s not always about what you know, it’s also about who you know. It doesn’t matter how new or experienced you are as an entrepreneur, or how big or small your business is. Attending relevant events and conferences allow you to take your business to the next level, no matter what that means for your business specifically. You can find conferences and events local to you that are incredibly budget-friendly, or free, that can give you the tools to make your business thrive. Our Digital Advantage team has outlined why attending business conferences can help you scale your empire.

Learn from the Experts - We’ve all heard the cliche, “learn something new every day,” and that could not be more true. No matter who you are, or how experienced you are, there is always room to expand your knowledge. Being able to learn from someone who can help your business grow and flourish is one of the most wonderful things about going to conferences. They can also help you stay up to date with current and future developments in your in

dustry to be one step ahead of trends.

Learn More About Your Industry - Being an entrepreneur, oftentimes they are too busy growing their business that they don’t notice what’s happening in their industry, so changes can come as a surprise. It’s critical for business owners to be prepared for any internal or external changes that may come their way. Attending events that are relevant to your industry can help you stay prepared for any obstacle that may come your way.

To Build Recognition - One of the most difficult obstacles for start-ups is building recognition. Going to business conferences and networking events can give you the opportunity to meet potential customers, therefore building up your brand recognition. A lot of events allow vendors to set up towards the entrance so they can pitch to people and build recognition around their product.

Why Should Entrepreneurs Be On Clubhouse?

The name of the app really says it all: Clubhouse. The reality is, Clubhouse is just that -- an exclusive club for members of all communities. Many audio influencers have started their career from the app. And until earlier this year, the app was only available to iPhone users; but now it is also available to Android users.

Is It Worth It?
From our experience, absolutely! Especially as an entrepreneur where you must always be on top of trends and find opportunities to grow your business. If you love listening to podcasts, that’s even better because the structure is so similar. And you can’t overlook the fact that you get to create and/or be a part of communities with like-minded people (and those who will challenge your thoughts), which is an experience, unlike any other social media platform.

That being said, keep Clubhouse on your radar. The app is not going anywhere and if its recent success shows anything, it’ll be booming in 2022. And if you’re looking for a familiar face, join our group, eWomenNetwork, in the app.

What is World Entrepreneurs Day?

Entrepreneur Day always occurs on the third Tuesday of November, which falls on November 16th this year. Being an entrepreneur means you organize and operate a business to produce goods or services for profit, but they take on a big risk to do so. World Entrepreneur Day (WED) honors those, men and women, who have built their business venture(s) from the ground up.

Entrepreneurs are easily one of the most hard-working groups of people, but that doesn’t mean they don’t deserve a break. Take World Entrepreneur Day to slow down, reflect on your accomplishments, thank your support group, and toast to your empire. Our Digital Advantage team has come up with different ideas of how you can celebrate with intention.

There are special moments in life that are often celebrated, such as the “typical events” like birthdays, graduations, anniversaries, and promotions. However, most of those moments make us feel obligated to celebrate. To celebrate with intention, you have the determination to get it done because it is one of your goals. Add “Celebrate World Entrepreneur Day” to your do list to ensure your hard work gets acknowledged, especially by yourself.

Browse Crowdfunding Websites - Crowdfunding websites, such as Kickstarter, which individuals and small businesses use in the early stages of their business venture to help raise funds toward a project or cause. Many well-known brand names got started on crowdfunding websites, so you may be surprised that some amazing innovations need startup costs that help entrepreneurs accomplish their dreams. Being a small part of someone else’s journey is so rewarding! You can stay in the loop on new products, by signing up for Kickstarter’s Happening newsletter.

Celebrate on Social Media - No matter if you are a business owner currently, or if you are dreaming of being one done day. Help spread the word using social media so all entrepreneurs can celebrate their wins together. You can support your favorite entrepreneur by highlighting them on social media, which could help you build a connection with them.

If you’re one of those people who need an excuse to celebrate, make November 16th your reason - pat yourself on the back and tell yourself you are an awesome, successful entrepreneur with a thriving business. No matter how you celebrate World Entrepreneur Day, do so with intention. Cheers to all the bosses out there!

How to Celebrate Entrepreneur Day with Intention

There are special moments in life that are often celebrated, such as the “typical events” like birthdays, graduations, anniversaries, and promotions. However, most of those moments make us feel obligated to celebrate. To celebrate with intention, you have the determination to get it done because it is one of your goals. Add “Celebrate World Entrepreneur Day” to your do list to ensure your hard work gets acknowledged, especially by yourself.

Mentor Another Entrepreneur - Consider mentoring an upcoming entrepreneur, if you have successfully proven yourself in your industry. Since they are just starting they will have a lot of questions, as there are a lot of unknowns when entering the entrepreneurial world. Give them advice, resources that helped you, or even a nudge in the right direction if they’re feeling stuck. You could also shout out their products or services on social media to help their brand get more eyes on them.

Host A Celebration - What better way to celebrate Entrepreneur Day than to give back to the people that believed in your business! That can include offering deals on your products or services, a small giveaway on social media, or hosting an event with snacks and beverages. Anything you can do, or afford, to show your appreciation and celebrate with your community because if it wasn’t for them you may not be where you are today.

Start with the customer – find out what they want and give it to them.

Acknowledge Your Support System Who Helped You Get to Where You Are - We all h

ave someone, or multiple people, that have helped us get to where we are today. That could be your family supporting your business endeavors, or a fellow entrepreneur that mentored you in your early stages. Take a moment during World Entrepreneur Day to say thank you to the people that have supported you in all phases of your business. That could be a simple text, email, or phone call, or even shouting them out on social media.
