Social Media Challenges: What Are They And How They’re Important for Entrepreneurs

Social media challenges are tremendously helping entrepreneurs grow their businesses and increase their brand awareness. People love challenges on social media because it challenges them to become a better version of themselves. Challenges are an easy way to increase engagement and genuinely build your community. In this blog, our Social Advantage Team has outlined what exactly social media challenges are and five ways they can help your business flourish.

What are Social Media Challenges?

A social media challenge is when you create a focused prompt for each day over the span of the challenge and encourage others on social media to join you. These challenges have the opportunity of going viral because anyone can join in. Every social media challenge has goals for your audience to accomplish, from beginning to end. The challenge needs to have a clear mission so participants can understand what they are supposed to do, when to do it, and for how long. Starting a social media challenge, where your audience is, gives people the chance to interact with your brand and create a great community.

Increase Brand Awareness

When you design a successful challenge, people will associate it with your business. One of the best things about running social media challenges is that you and your audience get to win every single day of the challenge. You get to teach people throughout your social media challenge something that will help them with their future ideas and goals. No matter if you are using word-of-mouth or putting out great content yourself, social media is critical to increasing brand awareness and gives people the opportunity to find you. Anyone can participate in social media challenges, so even if the challenge was put on by someone else if your brand participates in viral challenges you can get more recognition.

Creates Beneficial User-Generated Content

Social media challenges often require the participants to take action every day. Don’t overwhelm your audience by giving them too much to do because they may give up. Give them just enough to keep them excited and engaged. Once people start your social media challenge, they will tag you and mention you in their posts. That is considered user-generated content, which is content created by people and not brands. Social media campaigns that utilize user-generated content see a 50% increase in engagement. This will help increase your followers which are more likely to become more dedicated to your brand.

Humanizes The Brand

People will be more likely to trust you and your brand after having a positive experience together throughout your social media challenge. Working with your audience, to help them better themselves, is a great way to differentiate your brand from others. Seeing everyone’s posts throughout the challenge can give you a different perspective of your audience, which can help build more genuine connections. Interacting with the participants will make them feel more connected to your brand, so as the challenge’s host you must take some time to respond to people.

The Potential To Go Viral

If you have a small following currently, social media challenges are a great way to help you build your audience. People can share and invite their friends to join in on these challenges because most people don’t want to try new things alone. With social media challenges, it’s only a matter of time before they go viral, then you’ll see many people participating. Remember, people want to interact with you and learn from you, but you have to push them to take action through social media challenges. If you can, add rewards to your challenges - everyone loves incentives!

eWN's Ultimate CEO Gift Guide

When you’re the boss, you’ve got a lot of people to shop for. Throughout the year we get closer and closer to the work family we’ve created for ourselves, and when the holidays roll around, we want to celebrate them and thank them appropriately. No matter what holiday your people celebrate, it’s still the perfect time of year to show them you care.

For the person who’s always at their desk: Sitting at our desks all day has a lot of unwanted side effects: tech neck, blue light overexposure, finger cramps. But mostly it’s just plain uncomfortable.  A memory foam seat cushion and lumbar pillow are the answer.  It’s a lot easier to be productive when you’re not in pain!

For the Work Traveler: The Dell Premier Wireless ANC Headset is a must.  Not only does it come in it's own case perfect for travel, it offers active noise cancellation, and a battery life of up to 15 hours. They're comfortable, easy to use, and BONUS: eWomenNetwork members are eligible for an exclusive discount on Dell products and they have a treasure trove of travel friendly tech goodies!

For the Bookworm: Books can be a dicey gift.  Most people tend to give books they want the recipient to read as opposed to what the recipient wants to read. Even when you have a handle on their reading tastes, voracious readers go through books quickly, so the possibility of giving them something they already have is big. For the devoted bookworm, gift cards are the way to go.  Just be sure you know how and where they like to buy their books. Some people only order from Amazon, others have a favorite local bookstore they love to browse in for hours before buying. Everyone offers gift cards nowadays, so it can be quick and convenient regardless!

The Entrepreneur Playlist for 2023 | women entrepreneur blogs

Being an entrepreneur at any stage can feel like a lonely gig. Whether it be a day that makes you want to yank your hair out or shout at the sky in triumph, sometimes you need a little mood music to keep things positive, moving, and (let’s be honest) downright cinematic.

The Champion by Carrie Underwood

Favorite lyrics for entrepreneurs:

I am invincible, unbreakable

Unstoppable, unshakeable

They knock me down, I get up again

I am the champion, you're gon' know my name

You can't hurt me now, I can't feel the pain

I was made for this, yeah, I was born to win

I am the champion.

Roar by Katy Perry

Favorite lyrics for entrepreneurs:

Now I'm floatin' like a butterfly

Stinging like a bee, I earned my stripes

I went from zero, to my own hero

The Importance of Email Marketing for Entrepreneurs

Keap has helped thousands of small businesses flourish since it's founding in 2001. Their commitment and devotion to the success of small businesses has garnered them a reputation as one of the most trusted resources for entrepreneurs. Here to talk to us about the importance of email marketing for entrepreneurs is Darin Adams of Keap.

N: Why is email marketing important to entrepreneurs?

D: I was just in a group yesterday and someone was like “You know, I need to hire a virtual assistant because I just can’t keep up with everything.” And I believe in virtual assistants, virtual assistants are great! But the whole point is you should never do something manually that you can set up a system to do. If you can set it up so it happens in automation, do it. The problem with solo-preneurs, entrepreneurs, and the small business owner is you’re wearing four thousand different hats! And it’s extremely difficult to stay on top of everything, that’s why you set up automation to make that happen so that you don’t have to worry about it. The stuff you’ve set up once will happen and run forever.

N: What would you say to the people who think they don’t need email marketing because their social media presence is so strong?

D: Followers and likes do not pay your power bills. A while ago Facebook was down for the better part of a day and people panicked because all of a sudden, they realized “I have absolutely no control”, Facebook could go away at any time. Instagram could go away at any time. You use Facebook or Instagram or whatever your preferred platform is as a tool to get people into your database. If you put out a post of Facebook or Instagram or whatever there’s no guarantee anyone’s going to see that. If you have them in your database and you own the relationship, they’re part of your tribe, they’re part of your community and you can communicate with them. You cannot own that relationship if they only know you through social media. I’m all for social media, social media is fantastic, it’s your big billboard, it’s how you say, “come be a part of this”, but you’ve got to get people in your database, because once they’re in your database, now you can nurture them and take care of them. And you do that through email marketing.

N: What would you say to those entrepreneurs who want that direct contact but are concerned email marketing is oversaturated because people sign up for too many lists? Do people even open emails anymore?

D: It’s true, there are a lot of emails that go out. I get hundreds of emails everyday, I’m not saying I read all of them. Do you know what the most important factor is in helping them decide if they’re gonna open or delete that email? It’s not your subject line, it’s not the time of day, it’s not the day of the week, it’s not none of that stuff. It is your name and your reputation. It’s the relationship that you build. If I get an email from Sandra Yancey, I open that! I have a relationship, I like that relationship, and I want to open that. I’m looking forward to getting that stuff. If I get an email from somebody who emails me once a quarter and I don’t know who they are, and I don’t know what they’re talking about, I’m gonna delete that. You use email to build the relationship. That’s how people will open the emails, when they see YOUR NAME and if you have a reputation for sending quality content. Some people think “I don’t want to overwhelm people, so I’m going to send fewer emails”, which is the exact opposite of what you should do. By sending fewer emails, you distance yourself even more from people and then when they do get an email from you once a month or once a quarter, they’re like “I don’t know who this person is”. So, the key is to build the relationship, and to foster that relationship, and actually send more emails, but send GOOD CONTENT in the emails. Don’t send “spammy” stuff in your emails. Email marketing is not there for you to spam people, it is there for you to build relationships with people.

The Entrepreneurs of Pop Culture

We live in the age of binge-watching TV and films from the comfort of our living rooms and it's never been easier to feel connected to the journeys of the characters on our screens. Let's take a look at some pop culture entrepreneurs and see what we can learn from their successes and failures.

MAD MEN

THE BUSINESS: Sterling Cooper Draper Price

THE ENTREPRENEURS: Roger Sterling, Bert Cooper, and Don Draper

On Madison Avenue in the 1960s, “mad men” dominated the advertising industry with outside the box creative, wining and dining clients, and lots and lots of mergers. Fortunately for the viewers who enjoyed the show and unfortunately for the heads of the company that seem incapable of learning their lesson ONCE, they learn over and over again to think twice before selling the company you own to a bigger fish. For men who were obsessive about the value of "having your name on the door", they were repeatedly too quick to sell their empire, only to pout and build another.

CHARLIE & THE CHOCOLATE FACTORY

THE BUSINESS: Wonka Industries

THE ENTREPRENEUR: Willy Wonka

Between the chocolate rivers, bubble soda, and gum that makes you balloon up into a giant blueberry, the corporate candy world is a dark place. Corporate espionage is plentiful with men in dark suits determined to use children as spies when the reclusive Willy Wonka opens is factory to a small few. But Willy Wonka knows how important it is to protect your secret sauce. Apparently only Oompa Loompas are to be trusted with keeping a secret.

The Focused Entrepreneur

With so many balls in the air, it can be easy to drop them all when the unexpected nudges it’s way into your line of vision. It’s in the entrepreneur’s nature to multitask and wear several different hats at once. But when does too much multitasking hurt the quality of your work and your productivity? What happens when an email totally derails your day? How can you manage to stay on task?

DND is your friend. I know we all think that it’s laughable to turn off our phones, but we lived without them for thousands of years before the 90s made them ubiquitous and the noughties made them essential. But Do Not Disturb isn’t permanent. It’s okay to unplug long enough to get things done. And remember, you can still allow emergency contacts to reach you on this setting, so if you need your family to have access, no worries!

Turn off notifications!  Yes, social media is a necessity for business owners, there’s no denying that. But when push comes to shove, and you need to keep your eye on the prize. Turn off those notifications. On your phone, on your desktop, your tablet- turn them all OFF. Take advantage of those automatic responses and trust that any comments or messages will be there when you return. As long as you respond within 24 hours, you’re all good!

Don’t be a slave to email.  Set designated times to check your email and stick to them. That doesn’t mean that you can’t utilize email between those times, it just means that you’re not responding to incoming emails outside of designated times. It’s so easy to say, “this will only take a minute”, but when you have an entrepreneurial level of emails in your inbox “this will only take a minute” can easily turn into hundreds of minutes.

Frustrated with Funnels? Focus on Your Message First

If you own a business and are trying to attract leads and sales online, you’re probably familiar with funnels. Funnels come with a big promise to take your business to the next level by automating your marketing and sales. There’s no shortage of marketing and funnel experts promoting specific funnel systems, templates and scripts that have all worked for someone else, but will they work for you?

With so much hype and big promises, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed and confused as you try to find a funnel that fits your business. If you’re like many coaches and consultants, you’ve likely tried to leverage the power of a funnel in your business, but maybe it didn’t feel right, didn’t seem to fit your business or your voice and it didn’t work.

But funnels DO work...and they can work for your business.

To show you how, we need to take a step back and look at the core of what we’re trying to accomplish with our funnels.

The Truth About Funnels

Funnels are a powerful tool that we can use to market and sell our products and services. They’re not magical, they’re just the way we’re strategically communicating with our ideal clients. If what you’re communicating isn’t on target, it doesn’t matter which funnel you use to do it.

Remember that successful marketing is about putting the right message in front of the right person at the right time.

You’re thoughtfully crafting a conversation with your ideal client. Whether that conversation happens in a store, in an elevator, over lunch or coffee, through an online funnel, or in some weird exchange of carrier pigeons, at each step along the path toward the sale, your messaging needs to fit.

The Customer Conversation

From start to finish, there are six phases in a typical sales conversation. Each phase has a specific goal, moving the prospect along the sales path while cultivating our relationship with them. When our ideal prospect doesn’t take the next step along our sales path, it’s likely that we’ve misstepped in the conversation. Maybe we’ve “rushed the relationship” by asking for too much too soon, or we didn’t build enough rapport or trust. We didn’t educate, or we didn’t show enough evidence or proof that we can help them achieve the result they’re looking for.

Before you worry about which funnel you’ll use to attract leads and sales for your business, take the time to map out these six phases of your customer conversation to make sure your messaging makes sense.

1. Kickoff

Just like you would do in real life, you need to kick off a conversation with your ideal prospect. The goal of this phase is to break through the digital noise and grab the attention of our prospects with a message that is relevant and compelling.

How you start this conversation depends on where your prospective buyer is starting from. What is your ideal prospect already looking for? Do they know who you are and what you do, or are they a complete stranger? What messages have they heard before and might be starting to tune out?

Short attention spans and increased skepticism have changed how we start these conversations online. Whether you’re using an advertisement, social media post, email or some other communication channel, we want your ideal prospect to think, “Oh, this is different”, “This is what I’m looking for”, “This is what I need” or “What’s this? I want to know more”.

Think about how you start your conversation with your ideal client. What are you assuming your ideal prospect already knows, is familiar with, or has tried before in order for your initial message to resonate?

6 Ways to Kickstart Your Week Right

Mondayitis is the feeling of weariness and general distress that individuals feel when starting Monday morning work week. It’s typically expected to follow the excitement of the weekend as the ‘non-workdays’ seem to come slow and leave fast. Before you know it, you’re waking up to the sound of your alarm before the sun rises to a new week. You suddenly stop and realize you haven’t completed the tasks you had on your to-do list and now it’s growing even longer.

For many of us, this can be overwhelming and difficult to conquer at the beginning of the week. We have great news - it doesn’t have to be. We’re back with our Digital Advantage team to give you six simple and effective ways to kickstart your week off right. No more manic Monday’s...who’s with us?

1. Set Your Weekly Goals

These can be related to your work- and day-to-day life. Whether it’s following a bedtime, prepping your meals or enforcing deadlines on specific projects, setting realistic goals for yourself is a great way to get out of your comfort zone and practice self-control. These skills will also help you become a more productive and well-rounded individual as you learn to master them.

It’s just as important to keep a list of your completed goals, as well. Reward yourself no matter how small the accomplishment is - progress is progress. Plus, this will help give you something to look forward to and that’s motivation in itself. Make a candlelit bath, a new book, or a Netflix binge night an incentive. These simple, yet impactful moments of self-love will not only give you a confidence boost, but will help rejuvenate and prevent negative thoughts like self-doubt.

2. Find Inspiration Around Every Corner

You come across a lot of stimulants throughout your day whether you realize it or not. The key is to take advantage of these things and transmute them into motivation. This will result in the right mindset of focusing on the positive influences around you.

It’s as easy as turning on your favorite podcast, watching YouTube videos of relatable people offering daily affirmations or listening to your favorite Spotify playlist that gets you going. Another great way to get inspired, if you have more time on your hands, are Ted Talks. These influential videos not only motivate through storytelling, but offer advice on various issues like business, health and lifestyle, finances, and relationships.

3. Maintain a Positive and Optimistic Mindset

This may be one of the most important factors to start your week off on the right foot. Going into the new week with a positive and optimistic mindset can affect your productivity and efficiency. What you think, you become. We’re human, so it’s completely normal to experience dark clouds, but keep in mind they will pass. Focus on the good things surrounding you and watch how that energy radiates.

Practice this every morning by creating a mantra you can recite. Remember, while you’re reciting this put all your intentions into it. If you don’t have the capacity to do so yet, try waking up to meditation music, stretching and avoid touching your phone at all costs.
